In the study, Hananel et al. (2018) compare the implementation of public housing in the United States, Sweden, and Israel. The study utilized the Esping-Anderson typology as its study method. The differences in the political-economic governments affect housing policies differently. Besides, changes in housing policies over time vary between the three countries. By conducting the study, the researchers aim to contribute to the development of better and effective housing policies by governments.

The researchers used a comparative research question. The researchers’ decision to use different countries with different political, economic governments is appropriate because different types of government differ in how policies are formulated and implemented. Besides, the type of political-economic government has a significant influence on the outcomes of the implemented welfare policies. The United States, Sweden, and Israel have different welfare state governments (Hananel et al., 2018 p.2). Sweden has a social-democratic regime while the United States has a liberal government.

Israel has a combination of the three types of governments, including social democratic, liberal, and corporatism (Hananel et al., 2018 p.2). Due to the rise of public housing again caused by the prevailing economic conditions globally, comparing the implementation of housing policies by different types of governments will help understand the most effective housing policies and the best implementation strategies to help address the housing problem. The outcomes of housing policies in the three countries are different, and trends in housings over the years vary between the three countries (Hananel et al., 2018 p.13).

The researchers should have included a more corporatist country such as China also. It would have provided a better perspective of housing policies in a corporatist system alone. The case of Israel is mixed with others such as social democratic hence does not provide a clear view of how corporatism influences public housing policy formulation, implementation, and outcomes throughout the years. However, the insights provided by the study are essential in identifying trends and the effectiveness of public housing policies.
