Reading and watching have a different impact on my comprehension and understanding of a text. In reading the story, “The Yellow Wallpaper,” reading enabled me to understand and familiarize myself with different scenes, characters, and themes. Through the threading exercise, I understood any instances when themes or other symbolic parts of language are used. On the contrary, watching gives one the general view of a topic (Bengrait, 2018). In this case, watching Wiley’s exhibit only gave me a top understanding of the topic. In essence, watching enables one to understand a director’s understanding of a given topic. Watching the exhibit, it is evident that most of the information presented relates to Wiley’s understanding of the text. The narrative is the original work from which the video is based, makes it clear to note differences between the two. Essentially, a video omits various elements of a narrative, focusing only on the critical elements the producer/director wants the audience to view.
Reading the book enabled me to harness my imaginary powers. Throughout the text, I formed imaginary scenes relating to the explanations made in the story. For instance, when John faints after finding his wife crawling on the flow, I imagined him falling by the doorstep due to the shock of the new unfolding (Perkins, 1892). On the contrary, watching the exhibit limited my ability to form mental images. Instead, I focused on understanding what was being said and how various parts of the exhibit were presented. However, watching the exhibit gave me a broader memory of scenes than reading the narrative (ABC News, 2016). For instance, when asked about anything between the video and the text, the video would be easier to remember. By connecting various scenes observed during the watching exercise, I can remember various parts of the video. Contrarily, I have a broader understanding of the text, yet remembering specific scenes could be difficult.
