The story I connected to the most was “The Cask of Amontillado,” written by Edgar Allan Poe. The reason I chose this text is because it discusses, how one can experience treachery and also lose their own personal liberty. These are themes which connect to me personally since I have at some point in my life encountered each of the facets. They are also common elements within the contemporary society which are still very recurrent. It appears that for one of the characters to lead a happy life another has to die, leading to actions which are executed as a form of retribution. For instance, Montresor feels betrayed and he narrates how he utilized persuasion to lure the gullible Fortunato to his death. This text reveals the experience through the application of symbols. Edgar Allan Poe uncovers the themes of freedom and confinement as well as betrayal through his story “The Cask of Amontillado” by utilizing several instances of foreshadowing.
There are some examples which can elaborate the themes which appear within the context of this story. For instance, Montresor leads Fortunato into the catacomb so that he could kill him since Fortunato had deprived him off the freedom of living happily. As they move deeper into the catacomb, freedom diminishes and confinement becomes imminent. This is an aspect that leads the reader to appreciate their own liberty. Betrayal, on the other hand, is evident throughout the story. For example, Montresor reveals the extent to which individuals are willing to go whenever they feel let down. The murderous overindulgences are troubling enough to make one cringe at the thought of them becoming victims. The narrator of this story is Montresor thus making foreshadowing an element that appears throughout the context of the story. He recounts bitter memories of what he was forced to do in order to attain peace of mind without noticing that he was implicating himself.
