The book “Twelfth Night” by Shakespeare is a comedy and not a tragedy. There is humor right from the beginning of the book where we find that in Act One, we see Orsino asks for music to so as that he can satisfy his hunger for love. Most of Shakespeare's comedy revolves around family and marriage. In this play we see that characters like Viola and Orsino, Maria and Sir Toby and Sebastian and Olivia will end up in a marriage and marriage in this book is a comedy as it signifies equality between the male and the female genders through love which unites them (Shakespeare, 1975). The mistaken identities create humour in the air by provoking laughter from the audience. The idea of cross-dressing by Viola complicates the play by erasing the difference between the feminine and the masculine gender. This also creates comedic air will the dressing style that does not match her gender. Shakespeare also uses humour while criticizing the shortcomings of the characters. This book is full of humour, therefore, making it be a comedy.
Shakespeare’s king Lear also had some elements of comedy in it when we find that in some scene of the play, King Lear holds a mock trial for his daughters. He tells the fool, edger and Kent to act as the panel of judges because the three were all mad or they were all pretending to be mad (Shakespeare, 1908). There is also another instance of comedy whereby we find that Edger, the legitimate son of Gloucester, is framed for wanting to kill Gloucester by Edmund, who is Gloucester’s illegitimate son. Edger is forced to disguise himself as a mad beggar and in the long run, ends up journeying with King Lear who is his own father but does not recognize him.
