Theology of Vocation As Applied to the Field of Medical Assistance

Introduction 

Worldview simply refers to the way somebody perceives the world, particularly in relation to the teachings of the Bible. Worldview is normally informed by beliefs formed after Biblical teachings. The word belief is a synonym of doctrine. A doctrine is simply a principle taught by the Bible. The Biblical principles taught to people are then followed when they believe in them. Therefore, people believe in doctrines of the Bible. This close relationship between doctrines and beliefs make quite logical to use the two words interchangeably as synonyms. For instance, Christians believe that human beings were created in the image of God and will always try to behave the way He behaves. Christians always practice everything God did because of this belief that they were created in His image. As a medical assistant, I believe that God too provided health care hence I share my vocation with God. 

How the theological truth, mankind is created in the image of God, is lived out in the Medical Assistance vocation 

Example 1: 

The Bible presents God as the Great Physician, to whom mankind seeks healing and they receive it. Therefore, just as I am a medical assistant, God too is a healer. I am made in the image of God just from the fact that I share in his vocation. The first example to illustrate how this theological truth is lived out is from the book of Exodus 15:26, which states, “‘If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.” 

In this verse, God says that He is the ultimate healer and if people obey His words then they will not become sick. Just us he brings life to people who obey his words, I also treat the sick and they get healed. It has to be noted that Moses was highly educated in all of the Egyptians (Acts 7:22). It is the reason he was aware of and used the Egyptian remedies for sickness. God made to him the promise of freedom from the diseases for those who would obey him. It is also important to note that God gave to Moses many health rules, which he adhered. A lot of people benefit from these rules that God gave Moses regarding the way of receiving healing and protection from sickness. 

Example 2: 

Once upon a time when I was visiting a relative who resides within the premises of a hospital that belongs to a Christian Church, I got the opportunity of worshiping on one Sunday morning. The congregants were mainly a group of believers who also resided in the staff quarters of the hospital. The church is mainly made up of people who are medical assistants at the hospital. These medical assistants are paid poorly and looked despised by people from other professions who think they earn better than them. They are actually accorded very little respect. Moreover, these medical assistants are among the lowest earning members of this church. The few whom I had an opportunity to have a brief casual conversation with them before the church service began had complained about this state of affir5s and most of them were planning to quit this vocation. 

So when I was given a chance to greet the congregation, I wanted to encourage them and demonstrate to them the way they are created in the image of God. I turned to Numbers 12:10-15, which states, “But when the cloud had withdrawn from over the tent, behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow. As Aaron turned toward Miriam, behold, she was leprous. Then Aaron said to Moses, "Oh, my lord, I beg you, do not account this sin to us, in which we have acted foolishly and in which we have sinned. Oh, do not let her be like one dead, whose flesh is half eaten away when he comes from his mother's womb!" Moses cried out to the LORD, saying, "O God, heal her, I pray!" But the LORD said to Moses, "If her father had but spit in her face, would she not bear her shame for seven days? Let her be shut up for seven days outside the camp, and afterward she may be received again." So Miriam was shut up outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on until Miriam was received again. 

To this group of believers, I stressed the words of Moses crying to the LORD, saying, "O God, heal her, I pray!" I explained to the believers that their work of providing health care is the same God was asked by Moses to do. He is a healer just like them hence they should be proud of their job. 

Conclusion 

The vocation one chooses is supposed to be connected with the Kingdom of God. Everything that we do must be related to what God did as taught in the Bible. Vocation is one way Christians find their resemblance to God (Ridings, 2016). When we do jobs that God performed to other people, we find the courage and pride that indeed there is theological truth in the teaching of us being created in the same image as that of God (Coombs & Nemeck, 2001). For those who are despised because of what they do, they should always feel the courage and confidence to continue with their vocation as long it has similarity with what God did. For all Christians are believers who follow the doctrines of the Bible.
