Professional socialization relates to the manner in which we learn the roles and functions of being a nurse once we enter the healthcare system. What are some of the ways this socialization occurs in your place of employment, and do you believe it leads to effective assumption of the nursing role?

In my workplace, professional socialization occurs when nurses and doctors work together towards a common goal of saving patient lives since nurses’ act as assistants to doctors in attending to patient needs. Still, professional socialization is evident when nurses actively interacts with patients when attending to their needs in either a hospital ward or in casualty department. The nurse talks to patient by asking questions and uses his or her knowledge and skills to offer the fast aid to the patient. Yes, it maintains a conducive working environment with colleagues while learning a set of values and professional culture ( McEwen & Wills, 2017).

This socialization occurs in a patriarchal healthcare system that still remains predominantly male physician-based. Discuss the impact, you believe, this has on socialization to the nursing role.

The impact of having a male dominated field may reduce positive interactions between nurse and the patients if men are the majority. Arnold and Boggs (2015) noted that women may get embarrassed in explaining their personal problems to a nurse who is not of their gender which might create a negative impact on patient’s health. The gender stereotypes worsen the professional socialization since female colleagues may be overworked when they are the minority. Women may feel being in a wrong profession and therefore may not associate much with male colleagues. The effect is felt more on patient nurse professional relationship when there exists two different genders.

Identify an area of practice where change theory may find applicability. Provide examples to support your answer.

The change theory helps understand the impact of change to an organization, identify obstacles and overcome resistance thereby accepting the modern technology by nurses. A planned change in technological advancement by use of computer assisted devices in nursing career might be a big challenge to nurses ( Piscotty, Kalisch, & Gracey‐Thomas, 2015). Introducing this change might impact fear of failure among nurses thereby creating an attitude of resistance. Technology is implemented by using a scanning device to evaluate the coded bar medication with the patient’s notification barcode which is prescribed for treatment medication to help minimize medication errors.

Comment on the inherent weaknesses in change theory that may impact real life situations or give rise to difficulties in the process of applying this theory.

The classic change model involves unfreezing, change and refreezing but this is not correct as organizations do not freeze since they are always in a state of flux and stages of change usually overlap. Change is a continuous process dictated by the environment in which the organization operates.
