In the book, Transcultural Communication in Nursing ,” Cora Munoz and Joan Luckmann describe the general principles of transcultural communication through the incorporation of the practical examples making it easier to read and understand. In the fourth chapter, the text captures the transcultural communication building blocks. Munoz and Luckmann (2005) achieve that through assessment of the beliefs, communication, and behavior. From this chapter, there is the concept of ethnocentrism. Ethnocentrism is an assessment of other cultures based on the preconceptions emanating from the standards and customs of the culture of the individual making the judgment. In the course of overcoming Western ethnocentrism in the healthcare setting, there is a need to learn more about other cultures to enhance awareness, as well as appreciating them. Additionally, it is critical to show respect to other cultures while avoiding assumptions and judgments in the interactions (Muñoz & Luckmann, 2005).

In the fifth chapter of the text, the focus is on the evaluation of the obstacles associated with transcultural communication. The chapter explores the barriers to transcultural communication. One of the prevalent contributors to these barriers is prejudice or ethnocentrism. There are also language barriers affecting transcultural communication in healthcare settings (Muñoz & Luckmann, 2005). The barriers also emanate from diversity in cultural beliefs, perceptions, and customs. Lack of awareness or knowledge of the cultural diversities and beliefs also contribute to the obstacles associated with transcultural communication.

In the sixth chapter, the text explores transcultural communication within the health care subculture. Munoz and Luckmann (2005) achieve that through an effective and critical assessment of the different subcultures. Some of the discussed subcultures in this context include western health care system subculture, hospital subculture, professional subculture, commercial/business subculture, professional nursing subculture, and patient subculture (Muñoz & Luckmann, 2005). The chapter further evaluates the communication issues among these subcultures while documenting the role and influence of the nurses as culture brokers between the subcultures.
