The standards highlighted are, Knowledge of cultures, Education and Training in Culturally Competent Care, Critical Reflection, Cross Cultural Communication, Culturally Competence Practice, Cultural Competence in healthcare Systems and organizations, Patient Advocacy and Empowerment, and Multicultural Workforce (Douglas, Rosenkoetter, Pierce & Callister, 2009) .
For each standard, a definition, supporting rationale, and a number of recommendations for implementation have been offered. All the standards stated are based on the principle of social justice and human rights where each individual or group is entitled to fair treatment and equal rights and participation in social, political, education, economic and in particular, health opportunities (Douglas, Rosenkoetter, Pierce & Callister, 2009) . The journal explains that the principle behind basing the standards on social justice is aimed at reducing and ending ethnic and racial inequalities in health sectors.
Finally, the article brings to attention the issue of a huge shortage the number of nurses due to global migration and increased patient population. Hence, it explains the need for educating more nurses capable of delivering culturally competent care to patients despite their geographical location. In the journal, it is also stated that more than 50 documents related to health professions worldwide were reviewed in order to come up with the standards (Douglas, Rosenkoetter, Pierce & Callister, 2009) . Therefore, the authors hope that the standards depict the best approach to enhancing a culturally competent health care globally.
