Various methods can be used to treat cervical disc disease, which is a disease in which one or more discs that lies between the vertebrae cause neck pain. These treatments can help to stretch and strengthen the neck and vertebrae, improve neck posture and reduce occurrence of neck pains. When one visits a physical therapist, he assesses how one can move their neck. He may also ask about neck pains, or pain in shoulder blades. Strength, reflexes and other probable sources of pain will be examined. The therapist may use several exercises to reduce stiffness and strengthen the area. Before the exercises, he may use treatments such as cold or heat application, deep tissue massage, electric stimulation and ultrasound (Donas & Torsello, 2018).
A woman called Sydney Smith decided she wanted to look more like her favourite animal, the Giraffe. She had copper rings deliberately added to her neck to force it to elongate and labelled herself as Giraffe woman. The Lahwi tribes of Thailand and Burma fascinated her. Eventually, she claimed her neck did not get as long as she had wanted it to get. Over time, the rings started to have an effect on her neck. At a certain point, she had about 15 rings on her neck that weighed about 5lbs. She eventually gave up on her quest since her life had started to be dominated by the rings. When she took the rings off, she had severe bruises on her collarbone. Her neck felt weak. She began medication, her health progressed, and she got better (Linning, 2017) .

Other methods include the cervical traction where the head is pulled away from the neck to bring about an expansion, which reduces compression. It is also referred to as gentle chiropractic technique as shown in Figure 1. It can also be done at home and as such, it reduces the need for surgery. Cervical pillows and collars can be used to reduce the movement of the neck as one sleeps as shown in Figure 2. However, there is little research to back this method (Donas & Torsello, 2018).
