The article “The Legacy of Racially Restrictive Immigration Laws and Policies and the Construction of the American National Identity” describes the existence of non-American citizens who live in America but have refused to adopt the American way of life. Despite being the minority groups in America, these groups have retained their own culture and way of life, which in the end seem to be a threat to the American way of life and culture. The increasing number of noncitizens of color in America is perceived by many to be causing an alteration of the complexion of the country and leading to balkanization in racial and ethnic groups. However, immigration policy and laws are to entirely blame for the balkanization into the race and ethnic groups. While there is a need to construct a national identity in America, the immigration laws are restrictive and only seem to hinder achievement of national identity but rather lead to grouping of people according to their race and ethnicity.
Laura Liu on his article “The Place of Immigration in the Studies of Geography and Race” mentions the need to have a geographic research on immigration and geographical research on race and racism be connected. The author argues that people of color in America are connected in many ways in the cities of the United States. On immigration, the author notes that the policies and laws on immigration are not always connected to the issue of race and racial inequality. The author suggests that immigration processes and policies in the United States should be linked to many other themes within race-related research in geography. To achieve the national identity, the issues of racial segregation, poverty, inter-ethnic tension and political participation of racial groups must be addressed. This can also be accompanied by understanding the current and historical issues of immigration of different racial groups.
