Data analysis is very important when it comes to healthcare research, in fact, it can be argued it is the very essence of the research. Different statistical methods are usually employed when it comes to doing analysis of a particular set of data that has just been collected. These statistical methods vary based on the objectives of the research as some could employ inferential statistics such as hypothesis testing while others would only require descriptive statistics such as mean, median, mode and standard deviation among others. Hospital administrators usually have a hard time understanding statistical methods as they are vast and different types of statistics are used for many researches and therefore it could get confusing. Moreover, for one to understand higher-level statistics such as multivariate analysis and structural equation modelling, they need at the very least some mastery in basic, lower-level statistics and methodological concepts.

Practical skills that could be essential in explaining healthcare research information to healthcare leaders include confidence intervals, null and alternate hypothesis testing, correlation coefficient, z score and t score. All of these are instrumental in interpreting the results of several tests. Alternate hypothesis otherwise referred to as research hypothesis is the hypothesis that the researcher needs to test in a particular field while the null hypothesis is the hypothesis that is the exact opposite of the research hypothesis. Correlation coefficient is a statistic that indicates the strength and nature of the relationship between two variables in a particular dataset. Z score and T scores are numbers that are very instrumental in both Z hypothesis tests and T tests. They indicate whether the researcher should fail to reject or reject the null hypothesis based on the alpha level. Finally, confidence interval, gives a probability that the interval produced by the method employed includes the true value of the parameter.
