Unprofessional conduct is evident in actions that affect the ability to carry out duties that the teacher is expected to. These may also negatively affect the students, parents or other teachers in the school. Drunken driving is one way in which a teacher could show unprofessional conduct since it goes against what these teachers explain to students as being good moral behavior. This is because the students are well likely to mimic the teacher, especially where these events occur on school grounds (Rumel, 2015). Where such a teacher shows up in school high from marijuana, he or she also encourages the use of this to the students, thus, being a bad influence on them. Such a teacher also may be unable to perform instructional responsibilities.

The use of drugs does cause impaired judgment and poor health that are possible causes of poor performance at work. Moreover, by encouraging the use of marijuana in students, the teacher interferes with the ability of these students to concentrate on their studies, leading to poor academic performance. All of these habits, including resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and being found in compromising positions, are unprofessional since they affect the results expected from the process of teaching and relating to a teacher (Strike 2015). This process expects teachers to deliver forms of content which, in terms of the development both of academic and moral competence, beneficially impact on the student community.

Conditions in which Employers Have Interest in Employees off the Job Conduct

Employers may take an interest in the conduct of their employees, off the job, in the event that the jobs in question are sensitively delicate and therefore, demanding in terms of the observation of strong moral principles. The nature of an occupation is what determines the extent of moral expectation from the employers (Rumel, 2015). A professional working in diplomacy is expected to be of the highest moral standards at all times; also, the expectations brought forward by stakeholders make these demands. In education, parents, the community and the students have higher expectations in terms of moral standards. It is for this reason that the expectations on Mrs. Petit are higher than those of other professions.

Conclusion

Professional standards are extremely important in determining the nature of expectations made in an occupation. Mrs. Petit’s case proves that there exists a very thin line between the violation and the protection of labor’ rights by employers. This teacher’s involvement in sexual escapades did draw the attention of the Board of Education. Moreso because the teacher was involved in a court case and in which she was found guilty. The only reason that such attention was gained was involvement in a court case in which the teacher pleaded guilty. The moral nature of this case contributed greatly to the reaction she received from the Board of Education despite being an off the job occurrence. In other professions, such as engineering, the behavior of employees may not be very crucial to the company outside of work. There may be exceptions depending on the size and impact of social connections with the community.
