Words are used to communicate an idea. Irrespective of the context, communication involves choices and reflects the values of the communicator and will have consequences. Any communicator that intends to be ethically responsible must choose their words well. In daily encounters, people prefer to associate with other whom they believe are careful over the choice of their words. A communicator should choose the right words that do not offend the receiver. They should try to maintain a relationship with the audience and avoid withholding information that is deemed crucial. For successful communication, the communicator needs to have a well-organized value system and ensure that they are transmitting accurate information (Cheney, May & Munshi, 2011).

How often do people misuse words while communicating? Many at times individuals find themselves inappropriately using words. For instance, in a professional setting, the facilitator might use words that do not befit the audience. The words though not intended to end up insulting the audience and the message are not received as expected. In some scenarios, communicators choose words that are out of context in their communication without realizing the impact that such action will have on the purpose of the communication.

Using an example of a committee meeting in a mid size company where each member is assigned some task which must be completed in a specified time, the chairman might be forced to select harsh words which can be unethical against one committee member who has developed a tendency of delaying the rest of the members. The chair might be forced to use words that can be regarded as uncivilized, or they might swear to take stern action against the member. The choice of their words might also indicate lack of accountability from the member who always derails the progress of the entire team (Cheney, May & Munshi, 2011).

Communication influences positively and negatively. The choice of words shows our judgment on the worth and value of communication. In communication, words are chosen for the effect that they will have on the audience, the communicator, and the society. In communicating, we need to consider ethical questions which are concerned with the help or harm that our communication will bring. Being aware of the moral dimension in communication helps individuals to understand themselves and their potential. Ethical communication which involves choosing words well is critical because it has a positive impact on the communicator and others (Cheney, May & Munshi, 2011).
