Utilitarianism is the ethical theory that applied in my experience with the old lady at the hospital. Utilitarianism involves evaluating the possible outcomes of and taking actions that do more good than harm. During the encounter with the old lady, I perceived that she could have undergone a procedure that she didn’t understand resulting in tragic consequences. Therefore, I ascertained that asking her to ask a member of the family to go through the consent form was the best option. I believed that it was not fair to let the old lady undergo a procedure that she did not understand. Every individual has the right to determine what happens to her body. John Stuart Mill is one of the distinguished authors who inspired me towards my belief in utilitarian approach. The author has written many books and articles explaining how the utilitarian theory is the best when considering ethical dilemmas.
I believe that human beings benefit from learning experiences in order to grow their behavior. Most people have a distinct perspective on things in the community. However, interacting with other people enables individuals to adopt new ideas from new experiences. It is impossible for individuals to exist in a single state in the community. People need different experiences to enable them to learn new concepts. It is also impossible for individuals to make all decisions on their own. Interactions with other people also allow individuals to correct wrong perceptions. Some people believe in concepts that are not correct. It is not simple for these individuals to identify the defects in their perceptions unless they witness other people doing the same things in a different way. Overall, people should employ diverse strategies and ethical principles when resolving ethical dilemmas that come their way. Emphasis should be placed on enhancing the common good for all.
