Various assumptions would be in place in the application of the two major paradigmatic approaches of logical positivism and interpretivism thoughts. Ontology touches on reality. For a logical positivist, one of the assumptions would be that major depression may or may not have real existence. This is only attainable as the researcher ignores their pre-knowledge on the topic based on other scientific findings to be rational. Thus, only the validity, reliability, and objectivity of the new study will answer the question and thus expound on major depression reality (Yilmaz, 2013). Epistemologically, it is assumed that the researcher and that under study are independent. However, this is not true as, at some point, the two have to interact; otherwise, no form of data would be generated. An example is a case where a decision has to be made on how the study on major depression on the chosen population ought to be done. Axiologically, the researcher’s values are taken with knowledge of potential biases; hence attempts are made to be minimized. This means that the researchers on values and expert opinions will be considered in the research even if not part of the study groups (Huang & Fang, 2019). Finally, the methodological assumption is that variables are interwoven and thus only emerging patterns are utilized late.
