Sociologist Max Weber does an essential job in distinguishing the three types of legitimate domination. They include the charismatic, tradition, and the legal-rational. The three tenets correspond to a type of leadership operative in modern society. The charismatic domination refers to a kind of authority where the leader has certain traits that contribute to their extraordinariness. The leader has a superior power to bring together a diverse group of people together or solve conflicts (Ritzer & Stepniskey, 2018).The traditional type of domination is primarily characterized by a dominant personality. The kind of leader mainly depends on the established order or tradition. It is a leadership style that reflects everyday conduct and routine.

The legal-rational type of authority depends on clearly prescribed laws. Order and obedience do not rely much on the leader but rather the competence and legitimacy of the rules and procedures bestowed upon the individual in authority. The three types of legitimate domination have their strengths and weaknesses. The charismatic authority is advantageous because it is easier to assert authority because they draw their power from massive trust and belief from the people. Donald Trump is an example of a charismatic authority that has massive followers who believe that he has exceptional qualities in transforming the country. However, since it comes with almost a messianic pledge of overhauling a system, it becomes difficult to achieve in the face of pressure.

The traditional dominance has an advantage of leadership because it does not involve any significant paradigm shift. They only have to adhere to the tenets of the status quo. However, Weber notes that it might tend to lack some form of moral regularity in the form of legal standards (Ritzer & Stepniskey, 2018).The position of the Queen in the United Kingdom could be viewed as a traditional dominance because it primarily relies on the set standards to assert dominance. The legal-rational authority guarantees systemization and order. However, it comes with a considerable level of bureaucracy that might fail to address the need of the people. Modern societies like the United States rely on legal-rational because it enables flexibility.
