Civil liberties refer to the freedoms and rights accorded to all Americans by virtue of their citizenship. Liberty also entails the limitations that are placed on the government with regards to how it acts towards the people it leads. The provisions of the constitutions of the United States related to civil liberty control the power of the government with regard to its people by asserting what the government can and cannot do. While in some cases it is necessary to compromise individual liberty for societal wellbeing, I am not willing to give up such rights and freedoms for the sake of crime control.

Search and seizure, for example, is an essential component of controlling crime. It allows the police to access private property and personal information to collect crime evidence. I do not believe in increased authority for police to search individuals with the aim of controlling crime because it often leads to the violation of human rights to privacy. Civil liberty laws dictate that the police must acquire a search warrant signed by a judge before they can proceed searching one's property. However, not all police abide by such laws. It, therefore, leads to conflict between police and the community in most cases.

Search and seizure laws also protect the citizens from targeted discrimination and bias, therefore ensuring that all citizens enjoy equal rights. Therefore, the police should not be given increased authority to search persons, nor should people give up their individual liberties for crime control purposes because this could create discrimination loopholes. All suspects are considered to be innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. This is, however, not always the case. Increased police power could mean a leeway for racial discrimination as it has been witnessed in the past. Given the possibility of unlawfulness among police forces, I would not give individual liberty for the sake of better crime control.
