Directional strategies are plans put in place to focus on efforts and resources as well as activities to help an organization achieve growth, maintenance, stability and retrenchment depending on its current status. Directional strategies help an organization to define what it stands for and what it plans to achieve in the long term. In this case, well-strategized plans are designed and implemented to guide the organization through the directional change and strategy it requires. Therefore, the directional strategies and strategic alternatives need to be in accordance with the organization’s mission, vision and core values in order to be effective and efficient.

The directional strategy of Huntington Hospital was to provide high-quality health care services to the patients and making their facility patient-centered care. The directional strategy was achieved by improving the quality and bringing out the best in the healthcare professionals as well as improving the operational system in the organization. In other words, Huntington Hospital needed a directional change of growth and set up strategic plans to facilitate the change of growth needed in the organization. Huntington Hospital, therefore, connected their directional strategy and strategic alternatives to their mission, vision and core values to enhance growth. Jim Noble hired Markey who set up strategic goals to improve performance, thus facilitating growth in the company (Soule & Drabkin, 2015). Markey set up an operational and functional strategy to help improve the management of the operational units such as the Medi-Cal and Medicare units.

The strategic plan set by Markey in Huntington hospital was well implemented as seen in the results and feedback from the staff members. The step of evaluating and changing the environment of the organization made the staff feel free as it removed the pressure, anxiety and tension they felt while working (Soule & Drabkin, 2015). In addition, the introduction of the suggestion box for the staff made the staff feel free and open up about their suggestions on how to improve the organization and services given to the patients (Soule & Drabkin, 2015). In this case, the directional growth strategy and the strategic alternatives helped the organization to provide excellent and compassionate health care. Additionally, the strategies implemented helped them sail in the direction of being a leader in providing world-class health care in the community as a non-profit organization.
