A Sergeant Major (SGM) must prepare, plan, execute, and evaluate operations by assessing the working environment in regards to the operational variables. These variables include the economic, political, social, physical environment, IT, infrastructure, military, and time. They affect comprehensive strategic aspects that influence the outcome of missions, goals, and a plan of action (Sergeants Major Course, 2017). Estimates can also include the strategic course of actions communicated by the National Command Authorities or coalition. As a future SGM, it is imperative to understand how operational variables would affect the strategic environment of the U.S. military.
The U.S. continues to dominate the global military due to its superior strategic environment. The economy, infrastructure, politics, and information technology continue to give the U.S. military dominance. However, the U.S. is facing long-term and considerable security and strategic challenges from China and Russia. For instance, Russia and China are increasingly gaining a strategic competition, particularly by attainment veto power over other countries in terms of diplomatic, economic, and security decisions (Department of Defense, 2018).

China is continuously leveraging its strategic environment by modernizing its military and using its economic power to intimidate its neighbors with the objective of re-ordering the political, social, and military or operational variables. There is no doubt that the change in the physical environment would allow China to have a strategic position or environment in the Indo-Pacific region (Department of Defense, 2018). Therefore, as China continues to amass its military and economic growth, the U.S. would need to revise its strategic estimates. In general, China's dominance has far-reaching military consequences and would the United States' strategic estimates considerably.
In conclusion, the U.S. needs to reconsider its operational variables concerning strategic estimates in large-scale context. Any tilt in significant operational variables would severely impact the strategic estimates or strategic environment for the United States' army. Overall, the U.S. army's tactical actions such as strikes, battles, and engagements depend on the operational variables.
