Introduction

When evaluating whether a person is virtuous or not, one investigates two aspects of the individual. The first area to look at is the right beliefs and action that applies in a given area, as well as, the kind of a person who will do such things and form the beliefs. That is the moral action and the moral character of the individual in question. Today, people are either good or evil. In most instances, the goodness of a person is likened to beauty and truth. Over the years, people have continued to question why one should be a good person. Parents, schools and even religious centers work hard to teach people how to be good from their childhood. However, being a virtuous person more than going to school, church or parenting. The road to becoming virtuous has no shortcuts since everyone has a substantial goodness genetic component in them.

What does it mean to be a virtuous person?

Virtuous person means that an individual has and puts into practice the basic virtues, which include honesty, justice, kindness, and independence. By being kind, a virtuous person exhibits generous feelings about others and conducts him-self or her-self in a way that springs out of concerns of the well-being of them. The person is always distressed by other people distress and values their happiness of others as he or she values their own happiness. Therefore, being a virtuous means that an individual will establish an atmosphere of sweetness and freshness to those who surround him or her. In all instances, being a virtuous person translates to treating others as one will expect to be treated back without loving them. To be a virtuous personal also means one is honesty. Simply put, it means that the person is direct and truthful. A person has no hidden motives or beliefs as well as does not hind behind anyone or anything. Such individuals have a strong commitment, to tell the truth in every matter and find it difficult to lie. In being truthful, a virtuous person considers the consequences that may arise from telling the truth in some instances. For instance, a virtuous person will not expose the whereabouts of an individual to people who might cause harm to them. Being virtuous further means that the individual is just. The person does not condone injustices whatsoever irrespective of the kind of justification put forward. Being virtuous translates to standing up against injustices once one establishes a wrong has been done. Virtuous individuals do not let their affiliations stand in the way of their judgment. Finally, being a virtuous means that one is independent. That is, they are in a position to make their own choices without the influence of external forces. The person does not just do what others do, but questions why some things are done in specific ways before making their own decision.

An example of a virtuous person’s ethical decision

In some instances, people are caught in personal squabbles where some factors complicate making a decision. For instance, a judge who has to pass judgment on a friend’s or a family member case will find themselves at cross ends. In such an instance, justice, honesty, and independence are involved. The judge is obligated to ensure that the offended person gets justice and the offender is punished. On the other hand, the judge is expected to be independent in their decision and avoid all the connections he or she has with the offender. The judge is also expected to be honest in his or her judgment. It is tough to make a ruling on a case that involves that involves a close friend or a family member. A virtuous person will consider the virtual principles and find the offender guilty. This is because the judge should not condone injustice or allow their decision to be influenced by his or her affiliation to the offender.
