The more people are confined in place, the more resources are required to sustain them. The phrase How many Earths would be required to support a planet in which everyone lived as you do?” opens up how much resources are required to sustain the current rate of consumption by US citizens. It has been established that as many as four earth are needed to sustain the more than 7 billion people currently on planet earth. With a personal ecological footprint greater than 6.7, as much as four piles of the earth are required to sustain my resource consumption. With a national average of 8.1, my global footprint in the United States, the country ranks seventh on the global ranking. At the same time, there was an improvement in my total biocapacity with the country averaging more than 1 billion global hectares. Living in the US has greatly impacted my Ecological deficit. For instance, with a country’s average deficit of -4.5, and with a significant population, I believe that population distribution especially with most people living in major cities and towns has affected my ecological deficit compared to a global average of 2.75. I believe that people’s decisions such as mine to live in urban centers where most of the amenities are concentrated has affected my ecological footprint. As such, cultural influence and the need to stay close to school have ensured my ecological deficit. That’s because I have grown to believe that people who live in cities do better than those who live upcountry. Access to social amenities and employment opportunities has led to people shifting their views and moving to cities. At the same time, I have found the exercise educating in that I was able to know how much my choices can have a global impact.
