Clarke, R. A. & Knake, R. K. (2012). Cyber war: the next threat to national security and what to do about it? HarperCollins.

The world has been awakened to the reality of cyberwar which is increasingly becoming a global threat. Other factors coupled with a lack of clear policies have deterred the implementation of practical defense against cyber war. This is the information being discussed through chapters one to four of the book Cyberwar: The next threat to national security and what to do about it? by Richard A. Clarke and Robert K. Knake. Based on the first four chapters, cyber warfare has become popular, and it is likely to increase in the years to come. The authors attempt to illustrate how nations’ critical industrial infrastructures have been exposed to cyber-attack due to the internet.

The book, Cyber War adopts a non-technical writing style to reach a broader population of readers. The first four chapters provide understandings into the previous, present and future cyber capabilities and conditions. The book is also awake up call to the federal government that much need to be accomplished to safeguard the country’s critical industrial infrastructure. Defense security programs need to be enhanced, and more research needs to be conducted to vet the additional security measures that might be effective. This book cannot be ignored. The recent cases of organized crime targeting desktop computers using phishing and other malware should serve as an example.

Although the authors did an excellent job by giving insights into cyber war, their arguments are marred with overstatements and varying edits. They failed to reference their claims. It is advisable that for any work to be taken seriously, it has to give credit and reference the allegedly factual claims correctly. By failing to do so, Clarke and Knake’s findings and assertions should be subjected to further research to ascertain their credibility.

In conclusion, the authors did a great job with their writing skills since they used well-arranged paragraphs with ideas flowing from one to the next. The use of examples was also very significant since it can give readers a clear understanding of what they are talking about. The writing adopted simple words that are easy to understand, although they failed to reference their claims to make them credible.
