The best theory that can be used to help Marvin make up his mind is the natural law. In this theory, the moral act is that which follows nature whereas the immoral action goes against the tenets of nature. It also defines the position of God citing that he created nature using reason and hence nature is rationally ordered. The uniqueness of human comes about because of their ability to reason. Anything good is that which will help individuals to flourish and remain happy and evil acts will cause otherwise.

Marvin is caught in a romantic situation with a counselor who wants them to make love. He has two choices, whether to accept and pay retribution to her wife's previous misdoings or he remains loyal protect his family and hide his feelings towards the counselor. Such is a perfect case of the doctrine of double effect where the individual is facing conflicts from both opposing sides. In using the principle, good acts can be used even if they produce bad effects. Similarly, bad acts cannot be done even if their consequence is good. Therefore in solving Marvin's case, it would be prudent to determine what the good acts and bad acts entail.

The natural law theory postulates that good acts follow inclinations and will help people attain happiness and flourish. Evil acts are the direct opposite of the good ones. Therefore, Marvin should refuse to have a romantic affair with Marlene for the greater good of his family because that is where his long-term happiness lies. Secondly, by falling for Marlene, it would be a bad thing to do even if it was going to bring him happiness. The doctrine of double effect cautions against doing bad things even if they produce desirable results. Therefore, Marvin should resort to sticking to his family even if it will give him negative feelings concerning his wife’s past.
