QUESTION 11

Some international management experts contend that globalization and national responsiveness are diametrically opposed forces, and that to accommodate one, a multinational must relax its efforts in the other. In what way is this an accurate statement? In what way is it incomplete or inaccurate?

This statement is accurate because it states that globalization and national responsiveness appear to possess opposed forces. Globalization is majorly concerned with the production and distribution of similar goods throughout the world. It focuses on exploiting the worldwide market and ensuring that an organization reaps benefits associated with economies of scale by increasing its product production. In contrast, national responsiveness aims to understand customers' preferences in different countries' markets and act based on specifics nations’regulations as outlined by the government. This statement is accurate because national responsiveness and globalization differ and focus on different objectives and strategies. However, it is inaccurate to state that a multinational company must relax its effort on the other to accommodate one. The two operation strategies are essential to an organization’s success. Therefore, MNCs should accommodate both of them to yield all advantages associated with globalization and national responsiveness. As the organization focuses on gaining the economies of scale benefits through globalization, it is crucial to consider different customers' needs in different regions and different national standards and regulations.

Your response should be at least 200 words in length.

QUESTION 12

In what way do the concepts of formalization, specialization, and centralization have an impact on MNC organization structures? In your answer, use a well-known firm such as IBM or Ford to illustrate the practical expressions of these three characteristics.

Formalization ensures an outline of an organization's rules, regulations, and policies to guide daily employee operations. A formalized organization uses designed structures to control, make decisions, and communicate. It impacts the organization by ensuring that employees are well notified of their duties which they need to accomplish strictly, thus improving their performance, leading to the organization’s success. For instance, the Samsung Company employees acknowledge that they tend to be more productive because the organization outlines their duties and roles toward specific goals formally and strictly.

Specialization concepts focus on promoting skillful and qualified people at job positions that fit their qualifications. An individual is assigned a particular task ensuring that he/she focuses on his/her work without trying to multitask in other different categories of jobs. Consequently, employees become productive since they operate in their expertise, thus, improving the organization’s performance. For instance, Alibaba has differentiated departments based on different categories of work.

The concept of centralization gives the power to top management in the decision making process. A central point that constitutes the designated group generates decisions and power. This concept enables MNC to have total control over the business operations, ensuring that every worker performs his/her duty diligently. For instance, Alibaba practices centralization, and the top management makes all decisions regarding different sellers.
