Introduction 

Leadership is one of the most researched, studied and dissected topic in the contemporary world. According to Greenberg (2012), countries, business organizations, and non-profit all organizations are all keen to find what is the best mix that could be in put in order to have the most effective leadership. This has translated to such institutions laying emphasis on leadership development programs in all carders of their operation. Notably, the essence of such investment in the understanding of leadership stems from the realization that the success of any institution draws directly from the nature and effectiveness of its leadership. As such, given the constant change in dynamics that impact the operation of institutions such as practices, technologies, and clients’ tastes and preferences, it is imperative that leadership ought to be reevaluated time and again in order to shape the future. Accordingly, the talk on “what it takes to be a great leader?” by Roselinde Torres (2014) offers insights on understanding of leadership practices that can be beneficial but also detrimental. However, if applied wisely, the insights from the talk bears great potential in benefiting clients served in the 21 st century.

To begin with, the speaker points out that in the 21 st century practices have changed and leadership ought to adjust accordingly in order meet a client’s expectations (Torres, 2014). Although the talk has several advantages, several drawbacks are on the contrary identifiable from the same. First, Torres advocates for a paradigm shift in leadership practices from the age old practices. This needs to be executed with caution as some already existing practices prove to be working and need just modification in line with the changing times but not a complete overhaul (Sinha, 2015). Secondly, Torres advocates for extensive information sharing in leadership. Whereas this has the effect of finding several points of view to specific situation, finding a workable matrix may be a challenge if too many people are involved and some employees feel demotivated when their ideas are continuously not implemented (Sinha, 2015). Finally, Torres advocates for leaders to be risk takers irrespective out outward ridicule of the idea as being naïve. It is true that risk taking is an important part of leadership in the 21 st century but completely ignoring feedback and criticism, which could be positive, may result to massive failure in leadership. As such, significant drawbacks are identifiable in the talk provided by Roselinde Torres. 

Importance of the Talk in Understanding Leadership 

“What it takes to be a great leader?” by Roselinde Torres is important in the understanding of leadership in a number of aspects. The talk brings to light the fact that change is a constant phenomenon and as such, leadership models, practice as well as leadership programs ought to adjust in response to the 21 st century leadership needs (Greenberg, 2012). Moreover, the talk has both advantages and disadvantages, a mix of which should be found and applied judiciously for the benefit of clients and partners.
