Daniel Pink called the carrot and stick approach to motivation lazy and dangerous. Do you agree with this assertion? What are the implications of Daniel Pink’s message?
I agree with the idea that the carrot and stick approach is lazy and dangerous approach to motivation. This method is based on rewarding people with a sweeter carrot which is an analogy. By offering rewards cumulatively in regards to various levels of performance or threatening them with a sharper stick so that they perform better. This has, however, had a negative impact on overall performance ( Pink, 2009, 11.31). It has also led businesses into making assumptions based on ideas that are outdated and lauded more on folklore than conventional science ( Pink, 2009, 11.44-11.58).

This could, however, be remedied through alternative means. The new approach proposed by scientists is based on intrinsic motivation, and things that are important to individuals is bound to work effectively in enhancing motivation. This revolves around three distinct elements, Autonomy which is the urge for individual to direct their own lives, Mastery which is the desire to get better at something, and Purpose which entails the yearning to do whatever one does in the service of something larger than oneself ( Pink, 2009, 12.19-12.53). Daniel Pink`s message is effective since it has the implication of reaching out to a larger audience which will in turn enhance organizational performance at all levels of operation.
Thinking about motivation in your personal life, how can your supervisor motivate you? What works and what doesn’t work? What are they doing (or not doing) in the workplace to prompt people to innate action from your experiences?
As a realtor one of the things that really motivates me is getting to assist other people. My supervisor can, therefore, motivate me by increasing my encounter with more customers since this ideally makes me want to work harder to replicate better services to more clients. Rewards could also work towards enhancing motivation thought not effectively. This is due to the fact that they destroy creativity ( Pink, 2011) . Also, chastising does not help. Instead, it only manages to promote discontentment. It is, nevertheless, imperative to note that the business I work for allows individuals to work effectively from wherever they wish to work so long as they deliver in time. This inducement further enhances the entire experience for all employees leading them to work effectively.
