What is White privilege?
White privilege is a term that is used to define the benefits accrued or that are associated with being a member of the white community. These privileges do not necessarily mean that white individuals enjoy special rights that are not by other races but sometimes mean the privilege of associating just being a member of the white community. That means just being white increases the social status without the use of any force.
If you are White, what are examples you can think of where you have experienced and/or currently experience White privilege? If you are a person of color, what are some examples of being denied privilege due to your color?
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
As a white person, I get to enjoy an array of privileges that are not open for the blacks or the people from other racial backgrounds. The areas I enjoy the white privilege include; housing, affirmative actions, criminal justice and in the job sector. The fact that most whites are rich, most of the most luxurious, expensive and exotic places like schools and hotels are open to the white and rich majority. As a person of color, there is a high likelihood of not being able to afford top schools and other places ( McIntosh, 2010) .
What other kinds of characteristics convey privileges in American society, such as male, wealthy, beautiful, stature, or education? How do they provide privilege?
The other kinds of characteristics that establish the white privilege is the occupation of influential positions in the society. Since the persons of color recently gained liberation, history has not allowed them adequate time to occupy the positions of influence.
Can you think of privileges that are available in some social contexts or not in others (i.e. change as one moves from one place or social setting to another)? Provide some examples.
Some of the privileges available in the social context are lavish and posh communities. The kind of privileges enjoyed by the white in this context is not imposed but plays out naturally. That is, most of the white people are rich and able to afford to live in these communities.
Based on the video, "A Question of Color", what is colorism? How did this idea develop, and what are its roots?
Colorism is the concept and notion developed by the inadequate feeling of black American against themselves. The idea develops basically because of the poor self-esteem that the blacks had against themselves.
To what extent does colorism exist within each minority community in the U.S.? Give some examples.
Colorism exists where every minority group in the US have a negative perception of their color. In most cases, those who are less privileged and poor experience these kinds of tendencies.
