Problem Statement

California ranks as the second state in the United States of America in terms of disaster vulnerability, just after Texas. Over the latest decades, California has been being engulfed with hazardous events such as earthquakes, wildfires, floods, deadly thunderstorms, hurricanes, mudslides, and heat waves. These natural disasters in most cases are unpredictable and whenever they occur they lead to massive loss of both property and a couple of innocent lives. Besides, most of the natural disasters that strike in California are beyond human control.

Most of the California natural disasters come in unique combinations; making it hard for the state’s security agencies to address the inferno effectively. For instance, the state is reported to have experienced a combination of disasters, such as floods, excess heat, and storms. The wake of October 2017, for example, saw California experience one of the most terrible wildfire that turned the states’ property, worth billions of dollars, into ashes. The wildfire also claimed about 46 lives in the state. This was spiced up by dangerous floods and landslides that buried a section Pacific Coast and lead to destruction of Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge as well as forcing evacuation of residents living at the Oroville dam downstream due to water volume rising to unprecedented levels.

In order to establish a possible solution to the unfortunate events that keep recurring in the Californian state, there is the need to first launch a concerted research to establish the main cause of the disasters. This is an interesting field of research, as it will greatly help in fostering safety in the state. The exercise is a way of giving back to the community and it helps in developing search skills that help to unveil a dilemma that has surrounding the nation for decades.

Proposed Methodology

The research paper will utilize both qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis. The paper will utilize systematic literature search and review following the PRISMA guidelines of comprehensive literature search. For instance, the research will be based on various consultations with library scientists, where the search will involve PsycINFO and ERIC with Boolean operators. Under this search, disaster-related terms, such as behavior disorders, natural disasters, will be used. In addition, peer-reviewed articles and dissertations involving childhood, infancy, adolescence, and school age will be assembled and properly analyzed to come up with relevant information regarding effects of natural disasters.

To ensure inclusivity in the search process, “forward searching” will be conducted to come up with cited article in the search papers. Besides, “backward searching” process will be utilized. Under this scope, studies listed in the referenced materials will be examined for credibility. Other methods of data collection will include interviews with experts in disaster management departments. Here, emails will be sent to relevant authorities to help in availing the required information regarding disaster management practices.

Expected Value of the Research

This research will be a vital step towards containing disastrous events that have become a common phenomenon in California State and the rest of the United States. The study will come up with impactful exposure to natural calamities in depth. The research will internalize issues beyond PTSS and externalize youthful problems related to natural disasters. The results obtained from the study will help the California administration government in coming up with disaster management programs. In this way, the study will offer the California security agencies with vital information on how to come up with a reliable plan that will aid in minimizing the destructive intensity of the natural disasters witnessed in the state.

The analysis based on the information obtained from this research will be valuable to the field of emergency and disaster management in that it will offer a number of intervention measures in disaster management. One of the intervention measures may include provision of training programs in order to ensure that vulnerable populations, such as the youth and women, become exposed to disaster management practices. Another possible intervention may involve screening the youth for parental mental illness parenting stress cases that are likely to accompany or precipitate externalizing challenges in the California populations and elsewhere within the United States. In overall, the research will act as a pivotal point towards not only establishing why California is prone to natural disasters, but also provide relevant information regarding the best practices that the government, non-governmental agencies, and the residents may undertake in order to mitigate the destructive property of the California natural disasters.
