“Why Leaders should focus on long-term growth” is the title of the article under study. Knowledge@Wharton interviews Michael Useem and Dumaine in discussing their book and their company. The two have been involved in what they call CEO Academy which is basically a gathering of new chief executives. In the academy, they share what their previous experiences as CEOs in meeting the expectations of the firm on the long-term basis, which usually becomes a problem. They talk to new CEOs on getting over the barriers that CEOs face getting beyond the quarter. In the discussion, Brian Dumaine emphasizes the need for companies and new CEOs to make long-term investments and overcome the pressures of managing for short-term expectations. Their book also emphasizes on how most prominent CEOs managed to figure out how to manage for the short-term and the long-term at the same time. (Whartoon, 2018)
The article is giving insights and knowledge to new CEOs who are about to take office and want to succeed in their endeavors. The book gathers some prominent Chief Executives who have managed to handle setbacks and barriers that come with managing. The article emphasizes the importance of great leadership in performing the duties of chief executive. The two authors highlight the importance of making long-term strategies that would benefit a firm even after a certain quarter has ended. The interview resonates with my personality because it emphasizes leadership which is both charismatic and strategic leadership. It is only through a strategy that CEOs will have the ability to overcome pressures from the Wall Street and perform even better in the next quarter. Long-term investments are also crucial for any firm to aid in continues progression of any firm. I can learn from the article that it is crucial in leadership to have the ability to improvise and implement long-term strategy.
