How Gay-Straight Alliance Groups Mitigate the Relationship between Gay-Bias Victimization and Adolescent Suicide Attempts

Gays are likely to be victimized occasionally. The relationship between gay-bias victimization and adolescent suicide attempts can be explained using a lack of encouragement . In schools, gay individuals may feel out of place, and, thus, be at a higher risk of attempting to commit suicide. As such, gay-straight alliance groups are useful in eradicating hopelessness, which in turn helps prevent suicide attempts among adolescents. This is in line with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2017) , which encourages viewers to acquaint themselves with community resources including mental health centers and school programs to evade attempted suicide cases.

Why there are High Rates of Attempted Suicide in Hispanic and Latino Families

Cases of attempted suicide are prevalent in Latino and Hispanic families due to socioeconomic disadvantages, intergenerational conflicts, traditional gender-role socialization, and differences between parent acculturation and adolescents. For instance, demanding economic and social conditions may prevent the Hispanic and Latino families from accessing basic needs like food and shelter, hence, this influences them to attempt to commit suicide. WHO (2018) holds that violence with regard to harsh parenting and bullying together with socio-economic difficulties lead to poor mental health that subsequently prompt adolescents to attempt suicide.

Suicide Awareness/Education Curriculum with a Screening Program for Depression and Other Risk Factors

Signs of Suicide (SOS) is a suicide awareness/education curriculum containing a screening program for depression together with other risk elements. It was the first program to exhibit a statistically substantial reduction in suicide endeavors at three months, 3.6% in SOS and 5.4% in the control group.

Limitation of School-Based Programs in the Prevention of Suicide amongst Adolescents

Confidentiality worries might limit the number of learners who seek out help from teachers.

The implication of School Start Times and its Impact on Adolescent Sleep, Mood and Behaviors

Schooling affects the conduct of adolescents. A modest deferment in school start time shows substantial increases in measures of adolescent alertness, mood, and health. Thus, it is important to adjust school programs in order to meet adolescents’ sleep requirements, circadian rhythm, and developmental stage (Owens, Belon, & Moss, 2010).
