A bachelor degree in business administration equips me with a little bit of the technical know-how of navigating the insurance world. It also offers me the administrative skills needed to implement the company’s policy and fulfil basic administrative objectives. However, I lack the skills needed to manage practical aspects of budgets and schedules, in the sense that I lack the experience to know how they are done. I also lack the expertise to coordinate meetings especially those addressing technical issues that I have little knowledge about.
Nonetheless, I have experience in organization, supervision, and management especially involving large groups of people. Therefore, I need to learn how to coordinate people within a limited time and space while ensuring that I maintain an impartial attitude on how I interact with them ( Belker & McCormick, 2012) . I also need to learn how to infuse my administrative skills into a more demanding schedule while appreciating the technical aspect of the insurance field that requires me to be both direct and creative in addressing emerging issues.

I have previously worked as a volunteer in an NGO where I was in charge of outreach groups in coordinating them with community groups and medical teams. The NGO field lacks technical practicality and only requires one to be innovative in problem-solving and have excellent interpersonal skills especially when dealing with technical (medical) and non-technical (community) group of people. These skills will be crucial in my first few months in my role as a manager as they will help me in transitioning from being a more laisse faire manager to a more practical and serious manager. Also, my experience in dealing with and coordinating community groups has empowered me with the interpersonal and communication skills needed to deal with groups of people. They have also sharpened my supervisory skills especially those involving solving urgent emerging issues that require on-spot decision making.
An alternative experience that has helped shape skills has been being part of the electoral team campaigning for a United States Senator. Apart from the daily interpersonal interactions with people of varied background, it gave me an opportunity to experience the challenge of working in a strict and demanding schedule. The demands of being on the road and fulfilling set targets provided me with the opportunity to sharpen my work skills especially being efficient, articulate, and punctual ( Maxwell & Covey, 2012) . Another experience that I believe has helped in developing my work skills has been working as a sales rep for a foods company. It helped me understand and know the value of communication, creativity, and spotting opportunities when they present themselves. It also provided me with the needed experience of sharpening my inter-personal skills in the sense I had to deal with accommodating very rude customers.
I believe my experience and education background accords me the required expertise to be a perfect fit for the job. Despite my lack of experience in the insurance field, I have the experience, know-how, and confidence to execute all the job requirements perfectly.
In order to qualify for this position or a similar one, a year prior to my graduation, I would seek volunteer opportunities into social work that allows me the opportunity to sharpen my communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. I would also, join or get more involved in campus groups and clubs as a way of learning how to deal with people, especially within a demanding schedule. Learning about insurance and equipping myself with the basic know-how of handling insurance issues would help me prepare. Finally, I would seek volunteer opportunities in the insurance field to equip myself with the technical understanding of insurance brokerage and social issues involved in this field.
