My career is a Respiratory Therapist; a Respiratory Therapist is a healthcare practitioner trained in pulmonary medicine to treat people who suffer from pulmonary disease (Rashid, 2014). Respiratory Therapist often works in intensive care and operating rooms; they can be found in outpatient clinics and home health environments; Respiration Therapists treats mental, physical, and social disorders and diseases. Today's therapists have changed due to the use of technology; as a Respiratory Therapist, I work in a hospital where I meet and deal with different people who need therapy. When I compare current and past therapists I realize that a lot of changes have taken place.
Oxygen tents were used in the 1920s where a patient suffering from cardiac disease or respiratory problem will be put to help the patient to breathe; today therapists use life supporter machines which make it simple for them to operate because everything is there. Nurses usually had a difficult task to accomplish in the canvas oxygen ten as the conditions in the tent were not desirable, the place was hot and no cooling system which could almost cause suffocation to the patient (Reavell, 1937). The machines were also huge and bulk and this made it difficult for them to be moved from one place to another. In the 1920s there were no ambulances or airwaves to help transport the patient in case of an emergency and this caused loss of lives. Today there are ambulances, better transportation means, and airwaves which makes it easy to transport patience in case of an emergency; the ambulances also contains life-supporting machines whereby a patient can even be attended before reaching to the hospital. The working conditions were not favorable in the 1930s compared as nurses were exposed to risks and they could conduct diseases quickly or even die but today’s therapists are protected as good working conditions are provides and also protection is offered to them to avoid them from conducting diseases.

My career in the 1930s-1950s existed, but it’s quite different from today due to some changes and enhancements which have been made by the advanced technology which is making everything simple and easy to work. I would choose to be a nurse since I am passionate to help the patients and treat them to make sure they are well, so in the 1920s I would have become a nurse and this still relates to my current profession now of being a Respiratory Therapist. As a nurse, I would still have dealt with cases of people who suffer from cardiac diseases and respiratory problems by giving them the care they need; offering guidance and counseling will also be part of my nursing career as I will educate people and patients on how to take good care of their selves. Being a nurse relates to my current profession of Respiratory Therapist as I still work in a hospital whereby I deal with patients.
Today I work in a hospital, and when I compare my current working conditions with that in the past I see a great change; the use of technology has changed everything from worse to better, and I enjoy being a present therapist. According to Keiser (1987), in the 1930s the work conditions never favored the workers but now it does; better services are ensured due to the use of technology as everything is done through the advanced machines which quickly detect patient’s problems. The use of ambulances and airwaves which was not there has made transportation of patients efficiently; life supporter machines ensure that life of patients is not lost anyhow like before.
In my workplace there are all people females and males, people from all races are available in my profession no discrimination in my work takes place as better education has helped every interested individual to get a chance to be what he/she wants. Interacting with a different race in my workplace gives me morale as I am sure that all people can if only given a chance seen the number of females increasing each day motivates me as I learn that everyone is able. In 1930s women were not included and were being discriminated. The rights of workers regulate and makes sure that each is comfortable I his workplace.
