The “funny feeling” reiterated by Alex in the course of the film after receiving a rather unusual gift from Topher, is just but a tip of the iceberg. What was about to follow is an entanglement between two individuals; one exceptionally young and successful for his age, while the other, a middle-aged man is grappling to regain back his former glory having been demoted owing to a transition in Company management. This drama is a depiction of struggle and a feeling of how it would be like for someone who is trying to juggle between work and family life. By the end of this discourse I will have convinced you well enough that mixing family with business is without any doubt likely to amount to utter chaos. In addition the various concepts which will be addressed effectively in this analysis include: Conflict, communication as a founder for personal life, ineffective listening, relationship dialects, self-disclosure, non-verbal behaviors and regulative and constitutive rules guiding communication.

In order to elucidate all the points effectively; first of all I will elaborate the main family issues that emanate in the course of this story. Secondly I will tackle the aspects of loyalty, honor and love evident within the story and thirdly, I will tell you why it is important not to mix family with business. Now that I have presented all my major points, I will begin by tackling the first issue in the following section.

When things begin taking shape in this film, one would be obliged to imagine that unsettling feeling upon the realization that their new boss is half as old as they are. That feeling of discontentment while trying to come to terms with the fact that they have been replaced by someone they consider to be less experienced than they are ( Weitz, 2005 ). When I stumbled upon this story in the course of my research, it made me realize how a perfect friendship can easily be ruined by what would be considered to be an element of betrayal. The necessity for establishing boundaries between family and work is what my topic essentially concentrates on. Such emphasis is objective since that is the only way that one can ensure they are able to maintain a good relationship with their subordinates at work.

Upon the emergence of a corporate shakedown at an ersatz sports illustrated entity, Dan is on the brink of losing it all when finally, unlike other employees who end up losing their jobs, he is demoted ( Weitz, 2005 ). The dramatic firing of former employees to pave way for the new regime causes a lot of emotional anguish on Dan who even loses his magazine to Teddy K the new Company owner. One may think that he got lucky but he appears to be very disconcerted since his new boss is almost the same age as his daughter ( Kavoori & Matthews, 2004 ). Family drama locks the entire scene of the film with Topher Grace being deserted by his wife whom he had been with for up to 7 months ( Madden, Mathias & Madden, 2015 ). Dan on the other hand, becomes stunned upon learning that his wife was expectant. His daughter Alex also wishes to move to a more expensive institution to study creative art ( Weitz, 2005 ). Amidst all this drama, it becomes almost impossible for Dan to adapt. It appears that there are no boundaries between family and work at the organization. This further leads us to the next point pertaining to the relationships of the main characters.

The love that develops between Dan`s boss, Topher Grace and his eldest daughter Alex, is without any doubt an element that could as well have an impact as a film on its own. The viewer is likely to feel guilty owing to their ghoulishness as they eagerly seek to know what is about to happen next ( Weitz, 2005 ). Despite having to undergo the torment of being demeaned by having some minor individual command him around, Dan has another burden on the list for him to shoulder. Carter is faced with a test of loyalty which he fails miserably once he begins to pursue Alex. According to Dan, his boss has no regard for honor, and is instead concerned about what he delights in at the expense of everything else. The romance between Alex and Topher Grace, nevertheless, dominates Dan`s constant attempts to get things in order at work ( Weitz, 2005 ). In this case, the reason why it is not advisable to mix family and work will be demonstrated in the examples that follow.

In real life, people are faced with similar challenges; many of which are beyond their control. Dan`s exceptional character in the film is what ideally kept me glued to the screen. One cannot help but anticipate what he will do concerning the many problems that have set camp in his humble domicile. The working relationship between Carter and Dan is greatly damaged after it becomes apparent that the former is after the latter`s daughter ( Weitz, 2005 ). Topher Grace`s character is, nonetheless, unwarranted. He ensures that Dan invites him over to his home for dinner owing to the loneliness he was experiencing after being dumped by the wife due to his overindulgence with office duties ( Turnbull, 2004 ). This further reveals that he was a hard worker, whose charming nature in the film is not overshadowed by the many dismissals he offers to a section of employees.

To sum up this discussion, it is apparent from the illustrations above that I have revealed the various family issues existing within the context of the movie. Further still, elements such as love, loyalty and honor bear a lot of significance to the film. On the other hand, it can be shown that the romance between Topher Grace and Alex greatly affected Dan to an extent that he was unable to focus on the real issues facing him. With his wife expecting another child and Alex seeking to shift schools for a more expensive institution, it is clear that his troubles are far from over. Furthermore, the cordial working relationship he initially has with Topher Grace becomes damaged upon learning that he was after his daughter. There are numerous instances when we as individuals wish that we could control the course of nature along with the indignities that come about. Since this is impossible people should at least learn to embrace their problems and work towards bettering their livelihood and that of others.
