Introduction
This paper will focus on discrimination in the workplace as an event that has significantly impacted today's workplace. It will also discuss the event's relation to the current trends. It will then explain how the event affects today's workplace. The paper will describe my personal opinion concerning the event’s significance. Finally, the paper will communicate in a manner that is professional and scholarly for members of the human resource profession.
The event that has greatly impacted today’s workplace
An event that has significantly impacted today's workplace is the discrimination that is protected by the diversity law. The federal law has been changed to support a diverse workforce in the workplace. The law requires that all organizations should have a diverse workforce in order to allow them to service in their industries and avoid unnecessary litigations. Discrimination in the workplace has cost many large corporations millions of dollars as a result of lawsuits. Also, the discrimination affects the productivity of the internal workforce and the ability to recruit and retain employees (Jones & Lindsey, 2017) .

The event's relation to current trends
The current trend in the workplace is that employers have shifted their focus to promoting diversity in their workplaces. Diversity promotes teamwork, acceptance, and respect despite differences in religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, and political beliefs. Discrimination is related to the current trend of diversity in the workplace in that diversity helps in preventing discrimination (Barak, 2016) . Discriminated employees always feel like being isolated from the other employees, but through the diversity initiative, the employees feel like being part of the group or team. Workplace diversity facilitates innovative ideas for improvement because the diversity initiative will help the organization to have employees who look at things from different perspectives. It leads to improved employee productivity because of reduced workplace conflicts (Oswick, 2014) .
A personal opinion on the event's significance
I believe that through understanding the effects of discrimination in the workplace, managers will know the costs of discrimination to the organization and the employees. The state and federal laws prohibit the discrimination of individuals in the workplace. Therefore discrimination in the workplace can lead to legal action again the company. Managers should be careful when dealing with the employees by ensuring that their decisions are ethical and legal, which facilitates fair treatment of all employees. It is a challenge to eliminate discrimination in the workplace, but it is a chance for you as an employer to avoid any more court cases associated with discrimination. You should develop an equal employment opportunity policy that establishes the goal of the organization to promote diversity. Workplace discrimination increases employee turnover as it is disheartening and demoralizing for the discriminated employees. Therefore, through the diversity initiative, the company will reduce its turnover rate.
To the human resource profession
The human resource professionals need to understand the effect of discrimination in the workplace and the importance of a diverse workplace environment for the success of the organization. The human resource professionals should develop measures that ensure all employees are treated equally regardless of gender, age, race, and religion. The success of any organization is based on its diverse employees who can bring new perspectives, views, and ideas to the workplace. If you hire individuals from different personalities, it will help in fostering creativity and provide the organization with a range of ideas and perspectives for creating a competitive advantage. The human resource professionals should ensure that they offer diversity training to the employees in order to make them comfortable to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds, thus avoiding discrimination.
