The first article illustrates the condition of famine in Yemen with the UN claiming that there over 3.3 million people of which 2.1 million are children that are experiencing acute malnutrition (BBC News, 2017). The article includes data that enables the readers to determine the extent of the famine in the area and the causalities since 2015. It also focuses on the difficulties being experienced UN to conduct their aiding process and distribution of the relief food since the Saudi Arabia coalition that supports the government started battling rebel’s Houthi movement two years ago (BBC News, 2017). The paper is informative to the world in the Yemen conflict that has increased famine that affects the civilians. It is saddening to phantom that the government supported by powerful nations have not come to aid stop the war via negotiations for the sake of the civilians. The addition of relief funds is insignificant as the UN should be aiming at peace talks as the added relief food will not get to the intended civilians if the war continues.

The second article demonstrates the extent political instability is the leading cause of famine in four major countries namely, Southern Sudan, Yemen, Northern Nigeria, and Somalia. The article demonstrates the challenges of civilians working and reducing hunger by growing crops due to the wars perpetuated by political instability (Maiduguri & Panyijiar, 2017). It is disheartening to note that governments in these nations are willing to let civilians die rather than risk the relief food falling into rebels’ camps.

Pros and Cons

The main advantage from both articles is informing the world of the situation of these countries and the selfishness of the governments of these nations. The disadvantage, on the other hand, is the failure to provide solutions to the problems at hand whereas the articles may reduce participation to help these countries as it is evident their contributions will not benefit the public and children suffering.

Solution

The media should take responsibilities of the articles they publish by addressing the problems and offering solutions. Failure to do so will have no positive outcome. The articles should recommend the UN to put more emphasizes on the peace negotiations rather than just criticize the countries. Lastly, it is important for the UN to focus on peace and stability within the countries by seeking assistance from the powerful nations to ensure that civilians do not suffer from the selfish acts of their governments.
