Summary

Lizards have certain similarities with birds that involve the capturing of oxygen from air both when inhaling and exhaling. The monitor lizards have a special breathing mechanism known as the unidirectional breathing mechanism. It is a vital strategy because it enables these kinds of lizards acquires more oxygen when breathing than any other reptile.

What Do You Think This Piece Means To Other Scientists?

The primary research question in the article is on how the monitor lizards carry out the unidirectional breathing and secondly, how they acquired this mechanism with regards to evolution. The first major challenge for the scientist is to trace the evolutionary journey of this trait and make comparisons using other animals such as the birds.

Another challenge is posed to the scientists especially in the zoology department to determine whether other reptiles and crocodile-like animals have got a similar mechanism. Biologists will also work round the clock to carry out experimental research to determine particularly how the unidirectional breathing mechanism occurs. Such studies will also guarantee that evolutionary relationships will be postulated, especially with animals identified to have similar mechanisms for breathing.

Another challenging area that zoologists and biologists will have to get answers is why this type of breathing developed in the first place. Could there have been any evolutionary adaptations that led to it or was it just a natural mechanism?. Another fundamental question that would improve understanding of this trait is whether the amount of air breathed by the lizards is measurable.

Scientists in various fields such as biology and zoology have still much to do with regards to understanding the concept of unidirectional breathing. Aspects that need to be addressed include evolutionary relationships and other animals having the same mechanism. Such answers would improve the field of biology and zoology to the better.
