Human beings have had religious inclinations for almost as long as they lived. The religious affiliations might have varied depending on the deities of the time, but religion was practiced. In the contemporary era, Christianity is seen to be among the world’s popular religions. There was a time when most of the world’s population was predominantly Christian. However, with time, the population of Christians has decreased, although it still remains the realm’s most populous faith. Although Christianity is the realm’s most populated religion, its future seems dull with a lot of surprises and an anticipated decline.
Almost a decade ago, Christianity was the principal faith with a predicted 2.2 billion adherents (Hackett et al., 2015). This number roughly translates to a third of the world’s populations, which was closely followed by Islam. If the current demography changes continue, there is a likelihood of Islam having more adherents than Christianity (Gunn & Fernandez, 2012). It is estimated that Islam is the quickest rising faith among the rest of the globe religions (Ratner, 2018). This, therefore, informs the prediction of Islam overtaking Christianity five decades from now. Christianity is also expected to grow over time, but the growth will still not be as high as that of Islam (Ratner, 2018). Christianity will decline in the US and increase significantly in sub-Saharan Africa (Hackett et al., 2015). Some of the factors that will contribute to this monumental changes include the increase in agnostics, atheists, and Muslims (Gunn, C., & Fernandez, J. (2012). The differences in fertility rates, switching faiths, and the population size of youths in individual countries will also affect the viability of Christianity five decades from now.

The future of Christianity is one that is plagued with numerous surprises and a possibility of a significant decline from being the world’s most populated religion. Christianity will become more prevalent in Africa and decline from its widespread in the US. Islam is likely to be the world’s, most populated religion 50 years from now.
