A global citizen is one who embraces the diversity in different cultures around the world and can communicate and participate in development problems in regions that experience tough living conditions. Therefore, it is crucial to know the importance of becoming a global citizen since it encompasses adopting different skills and personal qualities. In this paper, I will discuss the difference between globalism and globalization, global citizenship outcomes, and my personal experiences with these outcomes. Besides, I will talk about how being a global citizen can help meet your persona, academic, and professional goals and why there have been disagreements between theorists about the definition of global citizenship.

The distinction between "Globalism" and "Globalization"

Globalism refers to the many connects within the world; network among corporations that make investments intending to build up economic activities such that everyone can learn some money. Globalization is the scattering of manufacturing processes across the world as it entails the expansion of multi-national corporations and their investments in foreign countries (Stucke, 2009). However, some people term it the ruthless exploitations of companies; on the other hand, as long as some get their little earnings, globalisation could be termed. Therefore, the significant difference between the two terms is that globalization focuses more on the speed at which change will occur, whereas globalism focuses on connections with different companies or co-operations which bring forth globalization.

Benefits of Global Citizenship

In a world of advanced technology, becoming a global citizen can be beneficial to my success in meeting my persona because it requires understanding and taking personal actions in areas where there are critical issues. Global citizenship can improve my decision-making skills and confidently speaking out my ideas and thoughts about what different people experience globally. My academics can also be greatly influenced by global citizenship because I will be exposed to new experiences and environment that will broaden my knowledge on specific aspects that I unaware of before. My profession goals will also be easier to achieve due to enough exposure to the world; additionally, meeting other global citizens will enhance my desire to achieve more.

Disagreement between Theorists about the definition of Global Citizenship

According to Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, having a clear definition of global citizenship may be challenging due to the similar terms that theorists have used to describe what encompasses understanding the broader world. Certain theorists defined global citizenship by using other interchangeable terms that confused most readers since terms were being changed over time. Philosophical theorists may use morality and ethics, while global awareness may be mentioned by education theorists (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013). I would define global citizenship as the act of showing responsibility and embracing the challenges worldwide.

Outcomes of Global Citizenship

Intergroup empathy

This is an act of showing concern and care to another group that feels out of place due to the various challenges. This helps to increase self-awareness through understanding other people's challenges, thereby making personal, meaningful actions. Additionally, empathy emphasizes assisting people out of their own free will hence a characteristic of global citizenship.

Valuing diversity

People have different beliefs, customs and norms, which defines diversity, the distinct culture of different people. Valuing diversity requires one to appreciate the differences and similarities of the beliefs and norms of people in order to become a global citizen. This allows people to stay with each other and avoid discrimination.

Personal experience of intergroup empathy

Recently, in school, I witnessed one of the students being discriminated against by other students. This happened because of the difference in the color of the students involved. The victim is black while the other students are whites; therefore, on seeing this, I approached the latter and stopped them from what they were doing. Additionally, reported them to the school administration.

Personal experience on Valuing Diversity

Once during an open discussion with friends, we talked about how different cultural groups and people behave when brought together during an event. From this, I learnt the different cultural norms and beliefs of different cultural groups and how people should embrace and create awareness about these differences in cultural beliefs.

Specific Education Courses

Introduction to Ethics and World Religions are the two education courses that helped me become a global citizen since they both focus on the aspects associated with global citizenship. The former talks about gaining more insights into what is termed right and wrong in different professions and aspects. Additionally, I learned the values of different cultural groups and how they conduct themselves to show respect, humility or kindness (Cameron, 2018). Introduction to World Religions focuses on understanding and embracing why people believe what they do and why they decide to carry out themselves the way they do. Furthermore, both courses helped me understand the two global citizenship outcomes: Valuing diversity and intergroup empathy.

Conclusion

This paper generally talks about the importance of becoming a global citizen as this topic entails various aspects. I discussed the difference between globalism and globalization according to the video, how global citizenship influences my persona, academics and professional goal. Furthermore, I included the reasons why there is disagreement in the definition of global citizenship among theorists. In my paper, I reviewed the two distinct citizenship outcomes, valuing diversity and intergroup empathy, and shared my personal experiences about the two outcomes. Also, I talked about the two educational courses that influenced my becoming a global citizen; Introduction to Ethics and World Religions.
