Richard Hill takes time to offer a brief comparison of several counseling modalities which guide counselors, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers or individuals with interest in mental health. According to Hill (2014), a clear understanding of the counseling modalities is essential so that clients can get the best help that there is. Moreover, Hill is of the idea that counselors must be aware of the mechanisms of therapy and the nature of human beings if they are to get the best out of the counseling modalities. Hill in comparing the psychologies divides the counseling modalities into four main classes: Cognitive and/or behavioral, Humanistic, Psychoanalysis/ psychodynamic/ analytical and Transpersonal.

Hill is of the idea that the four main classes of counseling modalities ride on different provisions but they have one main aim of helping clients to change how they look and the way they think. In essence, each of the four modalities has a different approach when it comes to helping clients change their thinking for the better. The cognitive and /or behavioral therapies claim that how individuals behave and do can be determined by what they believe or the way they think (Hill, 2014). The role of the counselor is to spot irrational behavior or language and help clients exchange them with thoughts that are more helpful. Psychoanalytical/psychodynamic/analytical psychologies are about helping clients to achieve a personality change by appealing to their consciousness through the “talking cure”.

Humanistic/Person-centered/Existential/Transactional Analysis counseling modalities, unlike the psychoanalytical modalities, focus on self-directed growth. Here the counselors help their clients to experience the needed change when the clients access a certain kind of relationship, which is characterized by on-judgmental caring, genuineness, and empathy. On the other hand, transpersonal modalities are about helped individuals achieve a greater self-realization. According to Hill (2014), self-realization helps clients to synthesize and integrate all of their parts into a single whole, which then helps them to connect with the self and soul. Overall, all the counseling modalities point to the fact that the client is at the center of the counseling process and all efforts are aimed at improving the clients’ well-being.
