Mary is a young single mother trying to catch the attention of her neighbor, Winston, whom she finds very cute. Despite been neighbors for almost two years, Winston has never shown even the slightest interest in her. Instead of requesting directly and telling Winston that she is interested in going out on a date with her, she wants to use nonverbal cues to make known her intentions. Moreover, Mary does not want to seem too desperate or evident as it might scare him away. However, since she fears approaching him with her request and wishes to use nonverbal strategies to woo Winston, she needs to resolve the issue appropriately.

First, she should consider why Winston has never shown interest in her; this could be due to her not knowing how to use and utilize nonverbal communication. Mary has some options when it comes to taking her course of action. One potential solution that is favorable may be to change her facial expressions as the use of a smile and maintaining eye contact can convey so much information to Winston. Another solution might be body language and posture to provoke Winston to go out on a date with her (Wahyuni, 2018). Decisively changing and improving her appearance by selecting different colors to match her outfits and hairstyles might be another possible solution for Mary to get Winston to take notice of her.

The pros of the first option, using facial expressions such as the smile, can go to great lengths to help Mary achieve her desired goal. Pasting a smile every time they see each other will make it known to Winston that she is interested in him. Moreover, a smile is the first thing a person notices about a person at first glance (Wahyuni, 2018). The cons of this option are that Winston might mistake the smiles as a sign of weakness on her part and, therefore, may choose to ignore her altogether. The second course of action, body language, has many pros and can convey so many feelings. Mary should have a more confident posture and always walk with her chin up. She also shouldn't fidget every time she crosses paths with Winston. Mary should always make eye contact with Winston as it conveys many feelings. Proper body language will go a long way to give Winston an indication of how she truly feels. The cons are that the body language can be less definitive and far subtle than intended (Wahyuni, 2018). The pros of changing and improving her appearance can evoke different moods in Winston to like her, while the cons are that it might not reflect the person she is.

After weighing the pros and cons, the best course of action would be to address the issue using appearance. Changing how she looks will go a long way for her to getting what she wants. According to Mehrabian (2017), the choice of color, hairstyles, and clothing can evoke different feelings and moods. Appearance can also change physiological reactions, interpretations, and judgments as most individuals make judgments based on the formation of a person. Impressions are crucial as even job seekers have to dress appropriately for the interviews with potential employers.

Mehrabian (2017) also suggests that a person's appearance choice can play a significant role in how individuals are perceived. Winston might start taking notice of her based on her choice of outfit colors. Attractive colors like pink and red are sexy, and Winston might get interested. Also, as men love seeing curves, she should dress in fitting clothes to show off her figure. She should also make a habit of wearing heels to portray a sense of confidence and attract people's attention.

Moreover, she should change her hairstyle often to match her dress code. A combination of these efforts will go a long way in making her intentions known to Winston without verbally speaking out how she feels (Wahyuni, 2018). Therefore, the chosen course of action, analyzing the issue and using the proper appearances, is thought to be the best fit for solving Mary's problems.

I suggest using appearance because it worked for me in a previous situation similar to this one. I had a crush that I wanted to go out with on a date. I had felt that I lacked in something until I decided to change the way that I look. I changed my outfits into brighter colors, wore fitting clothes, wore heels, and regularly made my hair. He finally took notice of me and took me out on a date. Therefore, addressing my appearance benefited my situation, and ultimately for the attention I was seeking.

After analyzing the research by Mehrabian (2017) and Wahyuni (2018), I suggest that Mary use the power of appearances to get Winston's attention and to get him to take her out on a date. Using the right impressions and dressing will receive the most positive response and may ultimately cause Winston to take her out on a date to resolve communication.
