It is believed that the compass was invented probably in China and Europe during the 12th century. However, the compass also known as the mariner's compass was later perfected in Europe and Italy between the 13th and 14th centuries. Before its invention, ships used to sail close to shores to observe natural landmarks which acted as their compasses. Nonetheless, the compass made it possible for ships to sail in the open sea and observe the right directions even when there were no natural landmarks. This navigation device was used for more than 800 years before being replaced.

Between 1400 and 1600 century, Europe experienced a new evolution in fine architecture, fine art painting, sculpture and drawing which was centered in Italy. The Italian Renaissance gave western art a new look, in particular, the Greek sculpture and painting. Since the 14th century, Italian artists began the search for a new artistic value due to the influence of the International Gothic style inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. The main aim of these artists was to create a global form of art that would show the exact mood and surrounding of that time.
