The population of homeless individuals is on the increase in the U.S. This has been fuelled by the rise in the cost of living, and as a result, many households are not able to cope. I n some instances, these families have been rendered homeless. This phenomenon has prompted various entities to establish centers, where such families can find refuge. One such center is the Eugene Mission, which is located in Eugene at 1542 West First Avenue . In a bid to understand the role such centers play in addressing the problems of homelessness, I visited Eugene Mission recently. Founded in 1950 to feed hungry, traveling men , E ugene Mission currently provides more than 700 meals per day, free toiletries, and clothing, and has a 400-bed capacity. It is also founded on Christian values and therefore offers hope to its residents.
I was keenly interested in visiting the children’s wing of the facility and was, therefore, delighted when happy faces met me . The children ha ve been train ed to welcome all visitors, and b efore I could introduce myself, the y had queued in front of me and began to s ing a welcoming song . I had bought a few items on my way to the home, and one of the child ren offered to help me with the package. The level of respect these children offer ed me was overwhelming. After greetings, the kids took me for a walk around the home, show ing m e its different amenities . I observed that t here was a clear chain of command, in which a head child was responsible for all the other s when their instructors and teachers were not around . The head also had an assistant .

These children informed me that everything that is receive d from visitor s is shared, exemplifying the spirit of the center . The head child also explained that all new and small children are treated with more care because they are bound to feel lonely due to lack of f riends . The children share d with me some of the challenges they encounte red. These included lack of enough clothing and financial problems which in some instances meant that they lack adequate teaching personnel and other essential needs. I also spoke to the head of the Center , who informed me of the broader challenges and opportunities that exist in the facility.
Based on my experience at the Eugene Mission, the importance of such centers cannot be overemphasized . Likewise, the future of Trauma Informed Care for the Homeless population is dependent on the collective goodwill of the society. This is not only in Eugene but also in other parts of the world. Therefore, governments’ and their people should commit to supporting the centers for the homeless as a moral obligation. The visit, therefore, inspired me to do more for the underprivileged. Thus, I have dedicated to spending my free time in teach ing the children various useful skills and to provide them with clothing. In this respect, I have urged my friends to make financial contributions which will facilitate a larger group visit to the center. Overall, my visit to Eugene Mission reminded me of the importance of tak ing the time to think about the underprivileged and helping them in our small ways.
