In a February 20 th, 2019 article of The New York Times, Karen Zraick describes how depression and generalized anxiety disorders are prevalent among American teenagers. These findings are according to research by the Pew Research Center. Seventy percent of teens perceive mental health illnesses as a major issue among their peers. The increase in depression and GAD among teenagers is associated with the pressure for academic performance, rampant use of social media, insecurity and terrorist events. The condition is exacerbated by increased safety warnings in the post-9/11 era and the fear of missing out in the social media era. Teenagers are experiencing biological and hormonal changes in an era of technology and easily accessible information, making it difficult for them to control some occurrences in their lives. While author provides a succinct description of the probable causes of anxiety among teenagers, the article fails to give the indicators and symptoms of the mental condition in affected individuals. According to Robichaud, Koerner, & Dugas, (2019) understanding both the causes and symptoms is important in the diagnosis and treatment of generalized anxiety disorders.

A friend from high school has been having trouble battling panic disorders since he was a kid. He would always worry about everything taking place around him – health, family, education, and friends. His family was the primary instigator of his anxiety, as his parents were always in a constant fight that culminated in separation and divorce. Given his ambitions of becoming a medical doctor on completion of his education, he was worried whether his family would be able to raise the money required to see him through education. His performance in school deteriorated, setting a cascade of more worries and panic attacks. He described that his stomach would churn, compounded by increased heartbeat and profuse sweating. He would experience shortness of breath, chest pains, and abdominal pains. In such instances, he had a fear of dying (American Psychiatric Association, 2019; Zagoloff & Bernstein, 2017). The condition had negative implications on his academic performance and with his parents’ situation; he was forced to withdraw from school after junior high. Through counseling and behavioral therapy, his condition improved, and he later enrolled in the military.
