In every situation, there is a need or requirement to ensure protocol is followed so as to achieve the best of results. When investigating child abuse, it is important to follow the necessary procedures.

Where child abuse is reported, an Investigator first contacts the local authorities. Identifying information that is already known is essential to ensure the safety of the investigator as during this process. From the Authorities, an Investigator can attain details of any prior incidents, or the behaviour of the accused. After which, a visit can be made to the child (“Child abuse - how the police investigate allegations,” n.d.). An interview is conducted with the child whereby they are ensured and guaranteed safety, regardless of what they share. From this interview, conclusions can be made to ascertain the conditions of the home, whether they are abusive only to the parents or to the child as well.

After this, a Child can be interviewed to determine their exact parenting style. Whether they are involved in the child’s life, and if there are any allegations made towards them, necessary action can be taken immediately. The investigator is also in a position to determine what kind of parent the child has. Whether measures to be taken are drastic or not. However, in a situation where the parent and child are unable to provide conclusive information as to the cause of the child’s behaviour, the Investigator can seek other people in connection with the family. For instance, asking the neighbours and close friends of the child. Talking to other children on whether they are aware of the situation (APRI, 2004).

Lastly, where there is no definitive evidence, or there is definitive evidence to support claims of child abuse, a laboratory test or hospital test can be conducted to ensure the safety of the child. The Investigator would be in a position to determine the safety of the child.
