Radio Frequency Identification systems fall under the broad category of Automatic Identification Systems. The products barcode is an example of an auto-ID system which assists in the identification of products SKUs at the point of sale. Active RFID systems are used to identify and monitor objects people and animals. These systems use radio waves and frequencies. Active RFID tags contain electronic information. They work by constantly relaying the signal to the nearest signal reader. The have their own sources of energy which help them operate remotely (all about electronics). The range of data transfer from tags to receivers depends on the frequency strength

Dynamic RFID systems are widely used in space exploration. The tags are mounted on objects such as rockets and spaceships to enable tracking and monitoring when exploring the outer space. Savi Company based in California is a long term producer of RFID systems and tag their main application is tracking and securing expensive containers in logistics. Savi also produces RDIF signpost positioned along roads and routes which the vehicle passes. These tags notify the monitoring room on movements of the cars across these areas and help in the recovery of stolen vehicles. They are accurate enough to identify objects which are moving at a speed of up to sixty Miles per hour.

The systems will be used in access management in the future. Doors with active RFID tags maybe modified to permit limited access to authorized people this will secure entrances more than locks and guards. There are also developments in the technology to print code on objects tracked instead of tags. Financial institutions will also rely on this technology to secure and enhance the newly introduced contactless payment services. This technology has been under scrutiny of late for interfering with privacy and exposing people to security threats which comes with illegal tracking and monitoring. Concerns raised also included the possibility of reading information linked to people without their consent. More Standard specifications on RFID systems will be developed to address security and privacy issues to make this technology more applicable in the future.
