When a habit hard to stop commonly it becomes a disease while the next course of action is to find a cure for it. Addiction is a global problem affecting many people and daily people are seeking help to quit addiction. According to Ross, Kincaid and Spurrett (2010), addicts are faced by limited role in and contribution to choice and decision especially when it comes to seeking help for treatment, control and relapse prevention. This decision on which treatment option to take is majorly a family and friend affair since closest people to an addict are on the forefront to support, research and recommend treatment options fit to the addict.

Nobody became addicted with the hope to become an addict that’s why almost all of them need help and treatment to live clean away from addiction. Though some addicts are able to quit on their own a few others need to be admitted for addiction treatment. This paper seeks to shed a light on the various treatment options available to choose from.

Thesis statement

Drug addiction is a complex illness characterized by intense and uncontrollable drug craving and compulsive drug seeking whose use persists to devastating consequences (National Institute on drug abuse for teachers NIDA, 2018) Matching treatment interventions and services to a patient’s problem needs is significant to the final accomplishment of them returning to their normal lives as cited by (Diane Publishers, 2011). Not every treatment option is fit for every addict, the decision on which option to go for depends on a number of factors including finances, proximity, age among many other factors. There are many available options including and not limited to hospital inpatient facility and outpatient facility, rehab and therapy either in one on one, family or group.

Body

Hospital setting: Initiating treatment for substance use disorders in the acute hospital setting has been shown to be feasible and effective ( Trowbridge et al . , 2017). In a hospital setting then the patient has access to diagnosis, medication and management services as well as counseling for a set period of time. A patient is admitted either as an inpatient living onboard in the hospital facility or as an outpatient coming in daily from home to seek treatment. Hospital setting is valuable because it has been credited to result in better medical and substance use outcomes, decreased emergency services utilization, increased completion of medical therapy, and transitioning to outpatient substance use treatment (Journal of substance abuse, 2017).

Rehabilitation: this involves the process of reorganizing a patient including his or her family with definite aspiration in the end through a team of professionals. Rehabilitation focuses on helping the patient go back to clean living, become a useful member of the society and then regain esteem and confidence robbed by addiction. Rehabilitation takes the form of therapy which encompasses a number of professionals each helping a patient get better. These professionals may include a patient’s nurse, physician, counselor, occupational and physical therapist, dietician as well as a psychologist. All these experts will each work individually with the patient area and then collectively when the patient has healed. This process might take a long time and can be inpatient or outpatient.

Therapy: A research by Diane Publishers (2011), cites that therapies are set to address a patient’s motivation to change their ways, abstain from drugs, replacing drug activities with constructive activities through an individual or group sessions and peer support programs. Individual therapy focuses on specific patient’s needs addressing all personal needs such as medication and relationships. Group therapies on the other hand is carried out among a similar group of people and is credited its ability to offer social reinforcement which helps a group of people choose to lead addiction free lifestyles and brings about accountability among group members.

Drug counseling: This option involves soliciting services of a certified counselor to help in abstaining from addiction. The counselor interviews the patient in a number of sessions until he or she gets enough information to start a treatment plan. Counselors apply counseling theories and techniques in a way that is healing for the patient and empowers them to not be in denial of their addiction (Miller, 2014).

Online counseling: This also involves utilizing a counselor to propose and execute an addiction treatment plan though virtually through a website. The sessions may be conducted in group or personal online therapy best suited for addicts who are busy but willing to seek help. Some patients prefer this option because it allows them to have privacy than on a one on one basis and also because it offers convenience and also guarantee that the information they divulge is safe.

Conclusion

Adequate time should be given for patients to undergo treatment even though no amount of time would make up for the days addicts were incarcerated in addiction treatment no matter how long offers freedom to addicts. Consequently, addicts need to commit their time and hard work to undergo the full treatment process.

Treatment seeking is not necessarily voluntarily sought by the patient sometimes sanctions and enticements from family or even criminal justice system may propose treatment for the common good of the society and the addict’s life. However, drug addiction need to be taught to people so that the society is informed about the problems this vice generates. Further, effort need to be put in making sure that addiction is reduced.

According to Journal of Addiction (2017), without addiction treatment, a large majority of people with a substance use disorder will return to substance use after discharge from an inpatient setting. Therefore follow up sessions must also be emphasized and the community social services, family and even religious fraternity need to be involved in the process.

Diane Publishers (2011) Self-help groups can complement professional treatment and addicts should be encouraged to join them. Groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Cocaine Anonymous encourage patients in self-help group and their impact shouldn’t be underestimated.

Addiction treatment is an important part of recovery for addicts whose contribution to the society well-being is immense and commendable.
