Childhood Experiences in Expressing in Adult Life

Adler gave importance to role of childhood experiences in expressing adult life by observing that, behavior patterns in children become significant when they are linked to respect, significance and acceptance (Kottman & Meany-Walen, 2016). Whenever adults display inadequacy and inferiority, the two may emanate from birth order, more so if the individual was subjected to personal devaluation at childhood. Belief systems and behavior patterns evident in most adults were developed during childhood.

Psychoanalytic and Adlerian Therapy

Psychoanalytic therapy is most useful because it offers solutions to problems such as personality disorders, depression, self-destructive tendencies, emotional trauma and emotional struggles. With this form of therapy, individuals can sort out constant relationship issues. Its usefulness is found in its effectiveness, considering research has shown 77% of individuals report improvement in quality of life, wellbeing, and interpersonal problems (Kottman & Meany-Walen, 2016).

I find Adlerian therapy useful in the sense that, it helps to shape human basic beliefs as adults. It guides individuals to discard the unproductive feelings and re-direct their attention towards forming corrections in the behaviors, feelings and values that tend to hinder positive growth (Kottman & Meany-Walen, 2016). The paramount benefit of Adlerian therapy is evident in removing destructive self-inclined behaviors and beliefs, and substituting them with elements that allow individuals to become socially empowered and confident.

Incorporating aspects of this approach into counseling style

Adlerian therapy can be applied in my own counseling style through creating a counseling environment that gives clients a sense of belonging. In the same vein, I will take an approach of imparting courage in my clients, to enable them feel appreciated and capable, so that they can act in a cooperative way (Kottman & Meany-Walen, 2016). This is especially important because, when discouraged, some clients can end up developing some unhealthy behaviors, which will make them give up. People enjoy whenever they feel valued, and as such, they end up shunning bad habits (Carlson & Slavik, 2013).
