During adolescence, teenagers behave differently from adults. Adolescents behave different ly from adults because they use the amygdala to process feelings while the adults use their frontal cortex. This difference is because adults can use their frontal cortex to distinguish fear from shock. The amygdala is responsible for impulsive behaviors while the frontal cortex is responsible for rational thoughts in adults. The frontal cortex matures much later into adulthood. The amygdala is emotional while the frontal cortex is thoughtful. Before studies were conducted, it was thought that teenagers behaved differently due to hormones. Adolescents also behave differently due to an increase in the connections between the brain cells and the pathways.

Teenagers are more likely to be impulsive, get involved in unnecessary brawls, and engage in risky behaviors such as using drugs and premarital sex. Due to the amygdala, adolescents are less likely to think critically, consider the consequences of their actions and reform their dangerous behaviors. The experiences that teenagers go through shape their development in different ways. What teenagers are exposed to during this critical moment of their life affects most of their lives.

During my adolescence period, I thought my behavior was determined by hormonal changes. Due to this , I did not understand why I behave the way I did. This information would have been important to enable me to understand the changes in the brain and emotions. I would be able to control my actions more if I understood what was causing them. This information will be vital for me as a parent to know how to react when my children exhibit impulsive behaviors. Parents should study how the teenage brain works in order to understand how to work with them. They should understand that risky behaviors are not caused by hormonal changes.
