The paper explores a study on “The Functionality of Family Relationships and Parenting Style in Families of Adolescents with Substance Abuse”. A number of articles relate to the topic of parent styles and adolescent development. The research is based on discussions on specific adolescent behaviors and developmental outcomes ( Matejevic, Jovanovic, & Lazarevic, 2014) . The study is a correlation between parenting styles and adolescent attributes. The results indicate that there is a difference between the two groups in terms of the patterns of family functioning. Similar to relevant issues on psychology and other relevant fields, the issue of parenting styles and impacts on adolescent has received very little attention ( Hancock, 2014) . Also, studies that focus on the topic are increasingly examining the importance of the effects and how experiences in the family contexts determine behavioral and developmental outcomes.
The literature demonstrate that the role of parents have primarily been to prepare children for adulthood ( Hancock 2014). The study suggests that authoritative families use adaptive achievement approaches that are characterized by decreased levels of failure expectations ( Baumrind, 2014; Steinberg, & Silk, 2014). Similarly, task-irrelevant behaviors coupled with the application of self –enhancing attributes also show the same trends. On the other hand, adolescents from families that are neglectful implement mal-adaptive strategies ( Steinberg, 2011). Hence, the study provides a basis to understand the processes through which parenting styles may influence adolescents, particularly student success and performance. In the final analysis, the achievement strategies that adolescents use play a significant role in their academic achievement and performance.

In conclusion, it is apparent that although a substantial amount of investigations have been conducted on these strategies, limited studies focused on the role. As such, it is necessary to carry out further research on other life domains, such as the family environment. This will add to the existing knowledge and play a vital role in the design of achievement strategies. Also, future studies should explore the extent to which parenting styles are linked to the strategies used in the achievement contexts.
