Response to requirement one: A description of the tasks and mechanisms that allow you to examine the existing system.

In the event of designing a database, certain undertakings are conducted, which eventually determine future examination of an existing system. Therefore, in the event of examining an existing system, the various task has to be performed, as well as mechanisms put in place to facilitate or allow the same. One of the tasks that allows one to examine an existing system includes validation of the technology, which enables one to establish how to go about the examination. Another task is the establishment of the system’s design and architecture, which helps in enhancing the examination due to familiarity. Lastly, one of the mechanisms that allow on to examine an existing system is the UNIX portability environment, to enable the establishment of needed changes within the existing system (Stephens & Plew, 2003).

Response to requirement two : A description of conceptual, logical and physical data modeling.

Conceptual, logical and physical data models are the three means through which data modeling is done within a certain domain. Conceptual data modeling entails the identification of the highest-level relationships between different entities. The conceptual data model is characterized by features such as lack of specification of any attribute, lack of specification of any key, as well as the inclusion of the significant entities and the relationship between them. The logical data model is responsible for the description of the very detailed data, depending on how much detail is needed, irrespective of how such details will be implemented physically, in the database (Simsion, 2007). Features such as the inclusion of entities and the relationship between them, the specification of attributes of each entity, specification of the primary key for each entity, specification of foreign keys, as well as normalization characterize the logical data model.

The logical data model is developed in a process that entails specification of the primary key for all entities, establishing the relationship between different entities, establish attributes for each entity, resolution of many-to-many relationships and finally normalization (Simsion, 2007).

There is also the physical data model, which is a representation of how the model will be built in the database. This model is the ones that show table structures such as column name, column data type, column constraint, the relationship between tables, foreign key as well as the primary key.

Features such as the specification of all tables and columns, depending on user requirement denormalization may occur, as well as the use of foreign keys in a bid to establish the relationship between tables. In addition to that, the physical data model entails an elaborate process that similarly has distinct characteristics (Simsion, 2007). For instance, the model’s process entails conversion of entities into tables, conversion of relationships into foreign keys, conversion of attributes into columns and finally, the modification of physical data model base on the physical requirements.

Response to requirement three: A description of the process and steps in choosing DBMS

A DBMS is chosen in the event of completion of an institution, company, or organization’s strategy to ensure the database management system is efficient and facilitates effective execution of the strategy. The first step towards choosing a database management system is to establish or identify one’s needs. Depending on the kind of needs one has concerning database management, it is important to choose a system that meets those needs; thus this being the first step towards selecting a DBMS. The second step is to consider whether it will be user-friendly, which means it has to have a design that facilitates its use. The third step is to establish the ability of the DBMS to visualize data and results (Gupta, 2013). A good DBMS should be able to present results on inquiries as well as other data in a manner that is both vivid and interactive. Also, taking security measures about choosing a DBMS is a necessary step, as it will ensure the safety of data. Lastly, when choosing a DBMS, the aspect of the wide collection of functions should be considered as it influences effective performance.
